Don’t Wait; Exfoliate!

dreamstime_xl_8569796When you’re getting ready to come into our wax center, whether you need a Brazilian wax, leg wax, or arm wax, it’s important to set yourself up for success by exfoliating. Exfoliation sloughs off dead skin cells, allowing the hair to become more prominent so we can fully remove it with our waxing services and you can be smoother for longer. Clearly, exfoliation is the way to go; but how does one successfully buff away dead skin and reveal baby-softness without harming your skin?

Invest in the right supplies

First, you will want a great body exfoliating scrub. If you are waxing your face, you will want a separate face exfoliant, because products designed for your body will be too harsh on the delicate skin on your face. You can find exfoliating scrubs in any drug or beauty supply store, or you can even make your own at home! Additionally, you may consider investing in some exfoliation tools. Dry brushes are a great way to exfoliate your body, and you can use them outside of the shower. In the shower, exfoliating gloves can be extremely effective. Even a basic washcloth can act as a great exfoliant when paired with your body scrub! Avoid loofahs, however, which are harsh on your skin and are breeding grounds for bacteria and mold. Brazils also carries a wonderful product called Elate Prevent online and in stores, which is a 7.5% glycolic exfoliant that does wonders to prepare your pre and post wax skin!

Use the right process

For best results, start by applying an oil or moisturizer to your skin. Then, use a dry brush to gently brush your skin with light strokes, starting from your feet and working your way up. After that, jump in the shower and use a circular motion to apply your body scrub from the feet up, using exfoliating gloves or a washcloth, if you have them. Wash the scrub off with warm water (not hot, which dries out your skin) and consider applying a body wash with salicylic acid afterwards, as this will help you with any acne or ingrown hairs. After rinsing that off, set out of the shower, pat your skin mostly dry, and apply a moisturizer.

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!

The final step to properly exfoliating your skin is to moisturize it, and this is particularly important when it comes to waxing. When your skin is dry and flakey, dreamstime_xxl_38096146your hair is dry too, which makes it more likely that it will break during the waxing process. This means that the hair won’t be fully removed, so you will have to come back in for a wax sooner than you would have had you taken the time to moisturize your poor, thirsty skin. Ensure that you are smooth as long as possible by making sure you both exfoliate and moisturize your skin for the week leading up to your appointment at our wax center. HOWEVER, do NOT exfoliate or moisturize the day of your appointment. If you exfoliate, your skin will be sensitive, and waxing will be more painful. Your lotion will coat the hairs and interfere with the wax, making it more difficult to remove them.
